BiographyThe surname McGilliard is rare in the published records, found most frequently in Ohio, followed by Indiana and Pennsylvania. Eliza McGilliard has not been found although a Mary McGilliard, daughter of Elizabeth Campbell of Somerset, Pennsylvania and John McGilliard of Hamilton, Ohio was born during the appropriate years for this sampler-maker. Could she have been Mary Eliza or Mary Elizabeth ? The records do not say. Mary McGilliard married Joseph W. Moore of Hamilton in 1824 and had 12 children born in Cincinnati, one of whom was named Eliza. Stylistically Eliza's work fits within documented Ohio and Indiana samplers.
