ProvenanceLinda Ford Wallace CollectionDescriptionThis wool on linen sampler inscribed Wemmelov 1854 depicts the church and tower in the town square of Vemmelev, in Zealand, Denmark (see photigraph below). Below a two line alphabet and inscription band underscored by an ivy dividing band a pair of putti , flanked by pink swans, carry a crown of life above a floral wreath bearing the initials IHS/ BADD. On either side angels carry two smaller wreaths with the initials HL/ADI/ S and AM/RID respectively. In the bottom left corner is a depiction of apple pickers. In the right corner is a tree of life with a serpent. Scattered small motifs include birds, chickens, dogs, flowers, a chalice, and a possible municipal shield.
