InscribedCome let us walk abroad and see the/ conduct of the active bee -/ No time he wastes in idle play/But labours for a future day/ so may I learn with equal skill/ my daily duties to fulfil - / And all my leisure hours engage/ in laying up for riper age/ whatever work we have to do/ Should never be delayed/ because the same excuses too/ To-morrow will be made/ Margarett Reeves finished this work May the tenth aged 8 years born at Hammersmith, Middlex
DescriptionWhile the alphabet and verse format of Margarett Reeves sampler is traditional , the wide narrow shape is unusual. At the top an upper case alphabet in alternating colors of pink, black and aquamarine, is followed by Roman numerals I - V. A Greek key bank divides this line from a lower case alphabet, a number sequence 1 - 10 and Roman numeral sequence I - XX. A smaller Greek key band in black surmounts the three side-by-side stanzas of an aphoristic verse advising youthful industry, followed by a simple cross stitch band above the inscription. The verse, inscription, and third key band below are also stitched in black. A pale pink geometric cross stitch band surrounds the composition.
