DescriptionThe Mary Ann Bobbett cross stitch sampler is undated but was probably made c. 1800. The sampler consists of three alphabets, a number sequence 1 -10, 2 four line verses, an inscription, a cross stitch border and ten dividing bands. The style of the bands, the diamond line stops and the two alternating colors (black and rust) of the alphabets is suggestive of the Norfolk style marking sampler. While Mary Ann was probably born in Somerset where there are many girls of this name during the assumed time of her birth and where the name is most prevalent, a Mary Ann Bobbett who was married in Norwich, Norfolk in 1821 is a likely candidate for this sampler-maker.
