ProvenanceLinda Ford Wallace CollectionDescriptionThe 1835 Mary Ann Seldon sampler is a formal sampler composition with a verse celebrating the birth of Christ in the top register above a tree of life with Adam and Eve. In the bottom register is a large tabby cat below a Quaker type octagonal medallion with a swan. At the top above the verse crowned cherubs hold a radiant octagonal medallion with a flower and to the right and left of the tree of life are matching elongated angels similar to those seen on the Jane Tucker Pering sampler of 1814. Like Jane, Mary Ann was probably from Devon. matching pairs of flower sprigs, butterflies, baskets, birds, hearts, flowers and other small motifs are arranged either side of the verse, tree of life, swan medallion and cat.
