ProvenanceLinda Ford Wallace CollectionDescriptionThe Ann Evans sampler displays the cheerful colors typically associated with Welsh samplers, as well as proclivity for a scene of Adam and Eve and the serpent, here executed in a loose chain stitch in contrast to the cross stitch of the rest of the sampler. The unusual patchwork pattern of the border is reminiscent of Welsh quilts. A four line rhyming verse is coupled with the 8th Commandment in the upper register. In the middle of the sampler is a depiction of a red brick dwelling labeled York Cottage. An inscription box in the bottom register and symmetrical arrangements of small baskets, flowers, and trees, a Greek key variation row and a foliage dividing band complete the composition.
