DescriptionStitched in green, gold, rust, tan, cream, white and pink, and surrounded by a formal carnation border, the Emma Parker sampler displays a 6 line religious verse inscribed "Reader", a balanced row centered on a two handle urn with flowering plant flanked by crowns and paired birds, striped vases with flowers and single stem flowering plants, the outer two of which support squirrels with fluffy tails. In the row beneath, paired birds, deer, striped trees and other small motifs (hearts, dogs, vases ) face toward a gatehouse on a stepped pedestal. The bottom register exhibits more of the same type of motifs with the addition of diamonds, baskets, and espaliered fruit trees, paired and in varying scales, surmounting and flanking a rectangular inscription box. Of note are the pink and white rosebuds emanating from flowerpots. This is the only (surviving) use of pink thread in the sampler and highlights the possible significance of the motif.
