BibliographyBolton and Coe; Ring -American Schoolgirl Samplers vol.2.DescriptionA handsome version of a style of Pennsylvania sampler known as a Terraced Lawn sampler, the Cecilia Kelter sampler is replete with a two-story, five bay, central hall brick mansion with a central shaped gable attic story and the characteristic black and white checkerboard raised basement. Behatted gentlemen in jackets and kneebreeches approach the house from either side, sheltered by canopied trees worked in greens, black, and brown. Pine trees with birds line the lawn, which hosts a grouping of 4 long tail sheep, 3 dogs, two rabbits, a minuscule deer with antlers, scattered flowering plants, and a row of four large strawberries. In the "sky" on either side of the house is a matching pair of cornucopia spilling lush flowers. In the upper register above a dividing line is a mixed floral wreath framing the inscription, flanked by floral arrangements in two matching vases. The sampler features an inner border of yellow rosebuds and an outer border of stylized pink carnations. Thread colors are green, tan, brown, rust, black, blue, and yellow.
