DescriptionCross stitched in greens, golds, browns, and tans with well placed accents of bright blue on a tightly woven linen ground, the Sarah Reed Hutching samplers is a study in balanced design. An inner strawberry border encloses a rhyming verse or hymn of three quatrains enjoining the reader in the proper observance of the Sabbath. Above this inner frame birds flanked by fruiting trees confront a basket , while below we find the inscription stitched above a two story, 3 bay brick or stone house set between regularly spaced evergreens and fruiting trees on a checkerboard lawn. Pairs of stylized flowering plants are stitched either side of the inner border. A formal floral outer border encloses the composition. The sampler is in style very similar to American Quaker school samplers of New York City and Long Island.
