BibliographyBolton and Coe, American Samplers, Society of Colonial Dames of America, Massachusetts, 1921DescriptionA sumptuous mixed flower border worked in satin stitch, straight stitch, chain stitch, stem stitch and back stitch with untwisted silk threads of greens, pinks, rusts, blues and yellow distinguishes the 1832 sampler of Phebe J. P. Thayer. In the lower right corner the twining floral vines of the outer border intrude into the sawtooth inner border, introducing a picturesque touch to the composition. The borders frame 4 alphabets, two number series, and inscriptions identifying the maker, 9-year-old Phebe, and her teacher, Belinda H. Fox. A small heart shape at the bottom is flanked by two flowering sprigs and a rosebud has been stitched at the end of the 3rd alphabet before the name of the teacher.
