Exhibition HistoryThanks be to my Friends: Selected Samplers from the Collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY, June 5 - July 18, 2004DescriptionIn the upper half is a William Hammond's hymn Awake and Sing the Song of Moses in blue, split into two columns and adorned with flowers, birds with berries, and a crenellated border flanked by two small angels. Below is an Arcadian landscape in two registers . From left to right , below densely stitched clouds and a sun, the upper scene shows three vignettes loosely divided by trees : A naked Adam and Eve seated on a grassy mound with birds and small animals at their feet; a hillside with 3 deer, a cow, and a rooster; A pastoral landscape with sheep, a dog, a shepherdess, a shepherd, and two clothed figures echoing the Adam and Eve at the far right of the composition are next to a hip-roof house. In the lower register, from left to right are a gentleman and lady with a dog, a flowered hillock, and a two story red brick house with a one and a half story extension in blue built into a hillside . Fruiting trees, birds, and butterflies complete the scene. The sampler is surrounded by an arcaded floral border.
