InscribedInscribed: Elizabeth Lewis / Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand / As the first effort of a youthful hand / And as her fingers o'er the canvas move / Engage her tender heart to seek thy love / With thy dear children let her have a part / And write thy name thy self upon her heart.
DescriptionThe Elizabeth Lewis sampler consists of a pastoral scene with multi-scale sheep, squirrel, rabbit, birds, and a diminutuve shepherdess cradling a lamb upon a verdant and flowering lawn. In the middle of the nearly square linen ground is a foliage enframed verse and inscription surrounded by Quaker style single sprig floral motifs, birds and a butterfly. A rose garland is draped around three sides. Of greatest interest is the use of untwisted silk threads and chenille threads that contribute a distinct texture and sheen to the composition. Thread colors are green, red, gold, blue, tan. black and white.
