DescriptionCentered on a common sampler verse stitched in black alluding to the memento mori function of the sampler, the 1830 Rebecca Shute sampler bears characteristics of the Quaker schoolgirl sampler - a twining (strawberry) wreath topped by a blue bird surrounding the verse and inscription and floral sprigs throughout the main field of the composition. Additional mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey) features are paired baskets and eight pointed stars. Four butterflies are evenly placed around the inscription wreath and the composition is finished with a strawberry border. Thread colors are green, brown, white, black, tan, and blue.
