Label TextAt the time that Rafael Ferrer made this print, he had begun working in the Dominican Republic on work he described as his “tropical sublime.” The period was marked by sundrenched landscapes of guileless intensity. In this work, bright green palm trees, a clear blue sky, and turquoise ocean create nearly a caricature of the typical tourism poster. Yet, these scenes also contain an uneasiness hinted at in the claustrophobic perspective—we know places like this are vulnerable in an age of intense tourism-driven coastal development and climate change.
