Label TextLee Bontecou belonged to a group of New York artists who broke away from traditional boundaries between painting and sculpture in the mid-twentieth century. Starting in 1959, she produced large-scale, mixed-media works made of metal, fabric, and soot. Soon afterward, she also began making largely black-and-white lithographs in collaboration with a printmaking studio on Long Island. Bontecou applied the same experimental processes in both media, often exploring similarly detailed and complex compositions. By the time of her participation in the Atelier Project in 1986, Bontecou had largely retreated from public view, leaving New York City in 1971 for a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania. Although she had appeared to drop out, she nonetheless continued her practice away from the public eye and art world center. Untitled belongs to a body of work distinct, but directly related, to her early, well-known works.
