Label TextKnown as an Abstract Expressionist in the 1950s and 1960s, George McNeil began painting figurative work in the 1970s. His energetic and caricature-like style, paired with vibrant colors, portray the disco dancers and punk rockers that he encountered in New York City. Reflecting on his artistic style, McNeil once said that it “seems to demand extremism; to distort, disturb, negate and agitate seems to be the name of the game.” In Untitled, the masklike faces elicit intensified psychological states and emotional intensity.
