DescriptionJohn Ruskin was the most influential art critic and theorist of the nineteenth century who wrote in English. He was a great admirer and collector of the work of Joseph Mallard William Turner. He was also a compulsive draughts- man from an early age, but came to the realization that he could never achieve greatness by his art. His great powers of observation and keen analytical mind yielded drawings of great beauty and visual intensity. Ruskin was acquainted with the Reverend Elias Lyman Magoon, the guiding spirit behind the first Vassar art collection. Magoon acquired seven of Ruskin’s drawings for the collection, including this one and a more controversial study made by the critic as a young boy. The identification of this view as the fourteenth-century church of the Annunciation at Vico Equense and its reconstructed sixteenth-century bell tower is a recent one. The village lies roughly three miles north of Sorrento and twenty-two miles south of Naples on the coast of the Bay of Naples. Ruskin journeyed there only once, in 1841. There are two entries in his diaries that refer to this location. The first on 26 February 1841:

A lovely drive yesterday from Castellamare to Sorrento. I could not see it well out of our close rattling carriage, but it was very perfect: all lovely rock promontory, orange and olive, and Vico placed ad captandum — thoroughly delicious.

And the second on 1 March:

Stopped at Vico to get a sketch, and failed, and bored myself.

It is altogether likely that his watercolor of Vico and its church was made on one of these occasions.
