DescriptionSmall, squat vessel of aryballos or lekythos type. Gnathia - black glaze over reddish clay. Fluted body. This small squat vessel was probably intended for use as an oil container. Gnathia ware is characterized by red clay entirely covered by shiny black slip. The vertical grooves in the belly of the vessel are covered directly into the clay and are set off from the neck and foot by horizontal encircling incisions. The neck and shoulder are decorated with patterns painted in yellow and white while the foot of the vase is earthen colored
