Label TextPhilip Pearlstein often depicted a close-up, cropped nude figure in his paintings and works on paper. His large etchings and lithographs were derived from his drawings; however, he used the inherent qualities of the printmaking media to sharpen or diminish the effects of his original compositions. For this work, he made a study in pencil of a model with a background view of Ninth Avenue in New York, contrasting the soft shading of the figure with the linear structure of the urban landscape. The background is rendered even more precise with the strong acid-bitten lines of the buildings in this etching.
