DescriptionThis tall narrow sampler is worked on a low count linen resulting in larger than average motifs. Worked in (now faded) browns, golds, greens, blues and reds, the sampler consists of an alphabet and numbers 1 - 10 with three dividing lines, the top line supporting a fruit tree flanked by 4 figures. Scattered motifs include evergeen trees, deer, a windmill, a strawberry band, baskets, a rabbit and a stylized owl. A swan motif may be an indication of Quaker influence and the geometric diamond/octagon band near the top and below two arcaded floral bands is a characteristic of some Norfolk samplers.
