Label TextIn 1865 Dutch landscape painter Henry Van Ingen became the first professor of art at Vassar College and first director of its art gallery. His pupils at the School of Art studied the art gallery's Hudson River School landscapes, British drawings, and prints after the Old Masters. They also made drawings after full-size plaster casts of ancient and Renaissance sculptures purchased for the permanent collection. Though most of these were sold in the twentieth century, the cast of Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise from the Baptistery in Florence is still found in the stairwell above Taylor Hall Room 102. Van Ingen studied at the Academy of Design at The Hague and upon coming to the U.S. taught at the University of Rochester where Matthew Vassar was a trustee. He became head of the School of Art in 1865 and taught at Vassar until his death in 1898.
