Bunmei Kaika: Political Landscape in Early Modern and Modern Japan

Label TextWhile rare, there are instances where the same design was reused to represent a different war effort. This print by Nagashima Shungyō bears the title The Korean Incident and was originally published in 1882. Two years later, a nearly identical version, now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was published under the title Record of the Sino-French War and signed by a different artist, Utagawa Kunisada III. The only significant changes from the earlier print’s design are in the colophons bearing the artist’s signature and address, name of the conflict in the image title, and description of the conflict, showing that the priority was publishing news as quickly as possible.
