Label TextBetween 1966 and 1967, the U.S. launched five robotic, uncrewed spacecrafts to orbit the Moon. This series of successful missions was known as the Lunar Orbiter program. Altogether they mapped 99 percent of the Moon’s surface using photography, and produced the first-ever photographs of the Earth from lunar orbit. This photograph was among 229 made between August 18 and 29, 1966 by Orbiter 1, the first spacecraft in the series. Orbiter 1 was equipped with a camera using two lenses: a narrow-angle, high-resolution lens and a wide-angle, medium-resolution lens. Simultaneous exposures taken with each lens were captured on a single roll of film, causing the slight moiré effect of the resulting, composite image seen here. The film was processed and scanned on the spacecraft, and images were sent back to Earth. Photographs like this one circulated in the press, building collective anticipation for the televised landing of the Apollo 11 mission on the Moon three years later. -Jessica D.
