DescriptionThe composition of the Hannah J Robinson sampler is centered on a grassy hill topped by a willow tree surrounded by shrubs and birds. Above the willow tree an eagle holds aloft a shaped banner bearing an evangelical hymn written in the second half of the 18th Century by an English Baptist minister (see note). The grassy hill is flanked on the left by a yellow flowering vine on a post and on the right by a vine possibly of hops. An unusual feature is the black stitched border worked in imitation of the eglomisé (reverse painted glass) mats that were popular at this time. Thread colors are Brown, gold, tan, black, green, white, and rust.
