Lingley; on verso, printed center: The Trocadero Palace was designed as one of the features / of the Exposition of 1878, and lends itself readily this year / as it did in 1889 to exposition uses. The name is derived from / a Spanish fort at Cadiz, captured by the French in 1823. It / is a huge building in the Oriental style, and is architect- / tural design has few superiors in Paris. The central portion / consists of a circular edifice sixty-three yards in diameter / and 180 feet in height, surmounted by a dome and flanked with / two minarets; and with its curing galleries to the right and / left, it has the form of a colossal crescent. The balcony in / front of the central building is embellished with six figures / in gilded bronze: Europe, Asia, Africa, North American, / South American, and Australia. Below the balcony gushes / fourth a large cascade, which descends to a huge basin sur- / rounded by a bull, a horse, an elephant, and a rhinoceros in / bronze. In the main body of the building is a concert-hall / seating size thousand persons, and in the wings of the palace / are some important collection of artistic and historical sculp- / tures. / The Trocadero Entrance to the Exposition is one of / great beauty. On the same side of the river are the inter- / esting colonial exhibits, both French and foreign. Here are / found the dark-skinned natives from every quarter of the / globe. The Russian pavilion, the most interesting of all the / national pavilion, is located here instead of on the Quai / d'Orsay.; by unidentified hand, lower right corner in pencil: VCAG 86.42.91
