Lingley; on verso, printed center: This historical church was built between the twelfth and / fifteenth centuries on a site once occupied by a Pagan temple / and a Christian basilica of the period of the Merovingian / kings. It is of a rectangular cruciform shape, 390 feet long, / 102 feet wide, and with transepts 144 feet wide (which are / shown in another of our views of the building). The stone / carvings of the portal illustrates religious events which are / most quaint and interesting. The National Convention decree / of 1793 changed its name to the Temple of Reason, and here / was set up the Goddess of Reason. It was here Napoleon / was crowned in 1801, and here in 1853 the later emperor and / empress were married.; by unidentified hand, lower right corner in pencil: VCAG 86.42.94
