He was part of a generation of painters in Florence during the mid-sixteenth century who did not follow the more flamboyant Mannerist model of painting exempli- fied by the work of Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino, but rather continued a conservative presentation modeled after Perugino and Ghirlandaio. The Vassar Baptism of Christ is a theme that he portrayed on several occasions. The present painting is really a condensation of figural motifs found in a larger version of the subject now in Berlin. This adaptability allowed him to satisfy the needs of patrons on many different levels of commissions.
