Label TextYasuo Kuniyoshi emigrated to the United States from Japan in 1906 and began his formal art education in 1910 at the Art Students League of New York. He and his wife, the artist Katherine Schmidt, eventually settled in Woodstock, New York. A village steeple is visible on the horizon of this lithograph from 1927, likely printed for Kuniyoshi by George Miller at the League. The sensitive, feathery marks facilitated by lithography suited Kuniyoshi's romantic aesthetic, the product of imagination and memory. The lithograph's simplified forms and flattened perspective relate to his interest in modernism and American folk art. -John P. Murphy, Philip and Lynn Strauss Curator of Prints and Drawings
DescriptionBlack and white depiction of a landscape with grasses and trees with a path visible in the center leading to a two story white house on the right. A roofline and steeple are visible in the background on the left. The work is rendered with a detailed, yet expressive sketch-like quality.
