DescriptionTwo 17th century silk panels that would have covered the coffered top and sides of a decorative casket. The making of a casket, a treasure box for other embroidered toys and sewing accessories, was an expensive and complicated project undertaken by upper class and aspiring upper middle class girls and the wooden box to be covered would be custom made by specialty framers and joiners. This example is also important in allowing us to inspect the paper backing upon which the silk ground fabric was mounted.
