Label TextThroughout his career, Jasper Johns has posed philosophical questions about originality, replication, language, and sign systems. 0 through 9 exemplifies his interest in motifs that are “seen and not looked at, not examined” in his words. By superimposing individual numbers from zero to nine over one another, they are no longer read sequentially. Instead, the numbers become layers of form absent the conventional sequence and pattern.
DescriptionIn nearly two-dimensional form, outlines of numbers 0 through 9 overlaid directly atop one another and rendered in grey lead.
