BibliographyJan Wijnants was a son of a Haarlem art dealer of the same name. The young painter lived in Rotterdam and Haarlem before settling permanently in Amsterdam in the late 1650s. Judging from the many debts he incurred in this city, he was not successful there, which presumably explains why he went into business as an inn keeper. It has also been said that his wife was obliged to clean paintings to supplement their income. Wijants died in 1684, without having solved his financial problems.
