Mary Wilby was born in Gissing, Norfolk, England in 1858, the fourth child of Robert and Ann Catchpole Wilby. She may be the Mary Wilby who in 1881 was employed as a servant in the household of Mary and Frederic Perfement in Diss, Norfolk. During the 1860s commercial stitching canvas, such as the penelope used by Mary, and synthetic dyed yarns became affordable to a greater number of people.
