Label TextArtists Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan met as graduate students at the former San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1970s and bonded over a shared sense of humor, both fascinated by the absurdity of photographs taken out of context. Their first collaboration was on a series of public billboards installed around San Francisco that reconfigured advertising imagery into surreal compositions like this one. In this satirical anti-portrait, the subjects’ identities are obscured by two of the most omnipresent forms of mass media: political propaganda and commercial advertising. They are presented as gender archetypes, identified only by the disembodied elements of the man’s tie and the woman’s hair, which stand in for ideals of male dominance and female beauty that permeate popular culture. They wear magazines as masks, their bodies fragmented into pieces like paper dolls.
