Label TextTwo portraits unfold across thirty years: Wendy Red Star and her daughter Beatrice, photographed at identical ages, attending Crow Fair in elk-tooth dresses, elaborate with beadwork. Their synchronized appearance in ceremonial regalia reflects traditional Apsáalooke styling shared across generations of women. The rose motifs threading the background reference Red Star’s grandmother, Iikua Biluxbakush “Self-Reliant” (Amy Bright Wings Red Star), celebrated for her rose appliqué and beadwork mastery. Red Star’s practice centers on reclaiming visual narratives of Apsáalooke culture through contemporary photography. Where historical photography depicted Apsáalooke life in monochrome as disappearing culture, Red Star’s vibrancy insists on cultural transmission as a cyclical living practice.
