Label TextWorks by artists of the so-called Hudson River School represent one of the strengths of the Loeb's collection. Vassar College trustee, the Reverend Elias Magoon, acquired many significant works directly from artists such as Frederic Church, Asher Durand, and Sanford Robinson Gifford. Matthew Vassar purchased Magoon's collection and in turn donated it in 1864 to the newly-founded Vassar College. These works form the core of the display permanently on view in the Founders Galleries. The recent acquisition of this painting tells the story of professional women artists in a male-dominated field. Titcomb worked in a variety of media as a painter, sculptor, and photographer, and contributed illustrations to Harper's Bazaar and other magazines. In the Catskills depicts a characteristic Hudson River School view looking over a body of water towards Hunter Mountain, the second highest peak in the Catskills. The dead trees in the left foreground lend the picturesque scene a hint of melancholy.
