Label TextBeneath a blooming sakura tree, students arrange themselves in formal rows, each wearing identical uniforms with blue ties and each bearing Tomoko Sawada’s face. Through digital compositing, she has populated the entire frame with herself, replacing every student and teacher in this preexisting group photograph. School Days / C belongs to a series of ten digitally altered class pictures in which Sawada photographed herself over four hundred times. Her method reveals photography not as a neutral record but as an apparatus for producing sameness, casting the promise of individual recognition into something more unsettling: a meditation on homogeneity and what we inherit institutionally.
