Exhibition HistoryRaven Chacon, For Zitkála-Šá. Art Metropole, New Documents, 2022. Label TextOscillating lines cross a dark field, their curves derived from the measurement of horse gaits in an 1874 Popular Science Monthly study. Composer and experimental artist Raven Chacon transformed these visual diagrams into “source material for rhythms, drum patterns, bow pressures, and volume arcs” in a work commissioned by the Oregon East Symphony to premiere in the homelands of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The composition withholds conventional meaning while suggesting corporeal choreography and land traversal. Chacon draws from traditional Diné songs, organizing time through landscape and ceremony. For Chacon, this work represents “a perspective of tempo throughout one’s life, and a view of the momentum of shared human and animal history.”
