Label TextThis print belongs to Sovak's a-Historical landscapes series, which addressed the under-acknowledged history of slavery in the Hudson Valley. Sovak reproduces engravings from the 1840 publication, American scenery, or, Land, lake, and river illustrations of transatlantic nature, combining them with imagery from the contemporaneous abolition movement. Sovak's intervention aims to reanimate the people of color who were erased from the bucolic landscapes of New England, but whose labor and experiences were also integral to the region's development.
