Label TextPhotographer Melodie McDaniel became involved in the Compton Jr. Posse Program, an afterschool youth riding program founded by Mayisha Akbar in 1988. Akbar’s vision centered around offering the freedom and mobility that horseback riding provides. Over the course of three years photographing this organization, McDaniel was able to learn the ins and outs of equine science and care, equestrian styles, and the way horseback riding can teach self-confidence and inspire future careers and endeavors. Adrina, the 12-year-old participant seen here, said “I have loved horses since I was really young, before I even met one… I feel very happy when I am riding my horse. I want to get to the Olympics when I get older and ride in Grand Prix Shows.”
