Label TextAs a young adult, Vivian Maier roamed the streets of New York with a Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex camera in hand. She focused on various street scenes and several self-portraits taken through windows and other reflective surfaces. When Maier moved to Chicago to work as a nanny, she was able to continue her walking practice of photography. She learned about her surroundings and her place within them through using the camera for observation, primarily of urban street scenes. Maier kept this practice hidden from others. It was not until shortly before she passed that her photographs were discovered in a thrift auction house after she failed to pay the fee for one of her many storage lockers. Among the belongings, she left behind thousands of undeveloped rolls of film, evidence that she even kept some photographs a secret from herself.
