Label TextAfter the Second World War ended, Picasso moved to Antibes in the south of France. There his subject matter began to incorporate aspects of mythology as he became more interested in the cultural traditions of the Mediterranean region. Thus, a work such as this one summons the serenity and simplicity of the pastoral existence that seemed to serve as something of an antidote for the strife that captured the artist’s attention for the preceding decade.

DescriptionDepiction of a landscape with a goat in the left half of the work and a human figure playing an instrument to the right. The work is rendered in geometrical and wavy forms typical of cubism and uses greens, yellows, and brown predominantly with small amounts of bright cobalt.
