Label TextDon Baum was a fixture in the Chicago art scene as an artist and supporter for nearly 60 years. At the same time that he worked as a curator across Chicago, he also created works of his own. Though originally focused on painting, Baum became dissatisfied with the flat surface of the canvas and began experimenting with three-dimensional sculptures, which he described as “very free[ing].” Baum was particularly interested in assemblage art and found objects, which resulted from both his childhood tendency to collect discarded objects and his learning about Catholic practices as a young adult. In a Secret Lair emphasizes his lifelong fascination with the air of mystery surrounding religious devotional objects. Like much of his work, this sculpture, through its use of real bone and an artificial doll’s face, is visually reminiscent of a Catholic reliquary. When speaking on his work, Baum mentioned his interest in “the sort of needs people have [...] for this kind of higher power, and that, as a result of this, you see this kind of incredible creativity…”. Despite this, he remarked that his work is not overtly religious, but rather, focused on the mysticism of shrines and relics. Through its material composition and visual language, In a Secret Lair, and much of Baum’s œuvre, explores the human tendency for the fetishization of objects, as well as Baum’s curiosity surrounding its aesthetics.
