A Taste for the Modern: Gifts from Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller, Edna Bryner Schwab, and Virginia Herrick Deknatel
Friday, June 24, 2011 - Sunday, September 4, 2011
This exhibition celebrated the important gift-giving of three generous Vassar College alumnae, all collectors of modern art. Through dozens of paintings, prints, and drawings, Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller, Vassar College class of 1931, engaged Vassar in the heady art world of the late 1940s and 1950s, while Edna Bryner Schwab, Vassar College class of 1907, profoundly enhanced the collection's Stieglitz Circle works. Virginia Herrick Deknatel, Vassar College class of 1929, infused the permanent collection with key post-impressionist and modernist works on paper and sculpture. This exhibition of selected works revealed these collectors' passions for acquiring modern art across a range of media.
