A Gendered Lens: Recent Gifts of Photography from the Podesta Collection
The photographs displayed in this exhibition were among the most recent acquisitions to the collection, generously gifted to the Loeb Art Center by renowned North American art collector Tony Podesta. Known for his commitment to collecting contemporary artworks in many mediums, Podesta has a particular interest in photography and film by women artists. Largely due to the marginalization of women in professional photography circles throughout the twentieth century, photography made by women remains underrepresented in many museum collections. However, this gift furthered the Loeb's long-standing commitment to collecting photography made by women, and photography that centers gender and identify as subject matter. Acquisitions of work by women, as well as by transgender and gender-nonconforming photographers, and photographers of color - many of whom focus on the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality - strengthen the collection as it continues to grow.
