Tow the Line: A Performance by Kate Gilmore

New York-based artist Kate Gilmore came to Vassar College's campus for a one-time performance of "Tow the Line," a public-performance-installation in which two shifts of twelve female Vassar students stood in a circle and passed around ceramic vases full of wet paint for several hours. The performance questioned notions of work and creativity, limitations and possibilities, especially as they relate to themes of female identify, physical endurance, and personal expression.
