The Art of Devastation: Medals and Posters of the Great War
Friday, January 27, 2017 - Sunday, April 9, 2017
Rare today, art medals thrived for centuries and rose to new heights during World War 1. This exhibition of over 100 medals from both sides of the Great War reasserts their significance as works of art, and coincides with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into the war. The medals come from the permanent collection of the American Numismatic Society in New York, which co-organized the exhibition with the Loeb. Interspersed were war posters on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Special Collections, Vassar Library.
Organized by the American Numismatic Society in conjunction with the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, the exhibition was made possible by the Smart Family Foundation. There are works that appeared in this exhibition that were loans to the Loeb and therefore do not appear on this website.
