DescriptionA native of central New York State, Arthur Dove went to New York City to earn a living as an illustrator in a fairly traditional style. Travels to Europe in the first decade of the twentieth century exposed him to incipient move- ments of modern art and shortly after his return to New York in 1909 he met Alfred Stieglitz, whose influence would in many ways change his life. He ex- hibited for the first time at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery the next year and regularly there and at Stieglitz’s other galleries for the next three decades. From the 1920s onward, his work was avidly collected by Duncan Phillips in Washing- ton, D.C. The Phillips Collection today owns more of Dove’s work than any other museum. Vassar graduate Edna Bryner Schwab was also a frequent client of Stieglitz’s and bought two paintings by Dove as well as a number of others by Stieglitz-circle artists. Broome County from the Black Diamond was purchased by Schwab from Stieglitz’s An American Place in 1932. It is one of Dove’s small vibrant landscapes from a period when his pure abstractions begin to integrate elements of direct observation and naturalistic rendering. His life and work at this time benefited from a greater level of personal and financial security, and also a move back to his former residence in Geneva, New York. There he paid closer attention to billowing natural forms and their occasional metaphorical references.
