Exhibition HistoryPoughkeepsie, NY, FLLAC, Vassar College, "XL: Large-scale Paintings from the Permanent Collection," Jan 30 - March 29, 2015Label TextJoyce Kozloff has been creating abstract compositions and public art for the last five decades. This painting was completed just a few years after Kozloff received an MFA from Columbia University. it is evidence of the endurance of large, all-over patterned paintings that began in the post-World-World War II era, yet she denies the influence of the male-dominated movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Hard-Edge Minimalism. According to the artist, her influences are much more eclectic. She states, “Beginning in 1970, energized by my participation in the feminist art movement in Los Angeles and New York, I became an originating figure of the Pattern and Decoration movement. My colleagues and I were exploring the applied decorative arts, especially visual cultures of the nonwestern world, as source and inspiration.” The painting illustrates her interest in brick facades, tile work, and Islamic architecture and mosaics, as well as textiles like quilts and patterned carpets. The imposing scale of the work speaks more to the relationship with architectural space than about pure abstract form.
