ProvenancePurchase by Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center from Sotheby’s New York, May 3, 2001.DescriptionThe career of Carl Frederik Aagaard is a footnote to the history of nine- teenth-century painting, yet this small landscape capturing the intense effects of evening light during the long summer days in Sweden is a brilliant example of the largely neglected field of Danish landscape painting. Aagaard studied at the Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and later became the student of Peter Christian Skovgaard. He traveled twice to Italy in the 1870s, became a member of the Danish Academy in 1874 and was made professor in 1892. He is known for his fluidly painted landscapes of the coastal areas of Denmark and Sweden. In the Vassar painting, two ladies with parasols and a boy in a vest and cap relax among the rocks near the north shore of the Kullens Peninsula, the western-most point in Scania (Skåne), Sweden. It overlooks the maritime confluence of the Danish Straits (Öresund) and the Kattegat, and is still today largely a nature preserve for tourists and hikers. The strong raking light of what is presumably early evening ignites the surfaces of the rocky coast.
