In Translation: Prints Across Media

Saturday, May 28, 2022 - Sunday, September 18, 2022
In a culture saturated with digital images, historical and contemporary prints raise timely questions around the nature of art, originality, and reproduction. Prior to the invention of photography, prints reproduced images of notable sculptures, paintings, or architecture for broad audiences. Far from rote or mechanical, these "reproductive prints" were acts of translation and interpretation.

Artists today carry on this tradition by reinterpreting their own work in the medium of print. Sculptors, painters, musicians, filmmakers, photographers, and fabric artists - sometimes with little or no printmaking experience - collaborate with master printers to realize concepts first explored in other media. This display - featuring many recent additions to the Loeb's collection - showcases innovative examples of art "in translation," crossing disciplinary boundaries while embracing printmaking's unique qualities and resources.
